It’s been quite a birthday for Jahari Stampley. All right around the same time, he turned 24 and released his first album, called Still Listening. On Sunday, he won one of the biggest awards in jazz. . . . , first place at the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Competition.
Here are a couple of tunes and a Spotify link to his new album if you’re interested. Enjoy!
I had the pleasure of watching him when he toured with Stanley Clarke. He really stood out. To think he’d only been playing for 8 years at that point and was incredibly virtuosic.
You’re lucky. Incredible how someone can start with the piano at 14, graduate from the Manhattan School of Music at 21, and then tour with Stanley Clarke. This kid’s good.
