Yes thatās one of the fun things with jazz. Thereās so many tunes to go through, literally thousands.
My task now is to go back and truly learn a good number of medium/up-tempo so that I can play them effortlessly at jam sessions.
Iāll will always love, and will always continue to play them solo, as I find it such a fun way to explore harmony, but jamming with others is the next step for me with my aspirations. So lotās of work cut out for me!
Yes Bill Evansā playing never ceases to amaze me Scott.
His rendition of My Foolish Heart in particular was very unique for itās time. If we think of the era that came right beforeā¦ the fast-paced, hard-swinginā sound of bebob and hard bop, this was such a shift in jazz trio performance.
Despite Evansā being a prominent āpost-bopā player, his downtempo recordings such as this one served as huge inspiration and motivation in my early days of learning jazz.
To be clear i have never complaining about Hayden version ā¦ just complaining about my foolish memory ā¦ and saying i will never give this tune for a beginner to remember , thereās so much more easier song .
The way i now try to remember song is to more going inside and rembering 251 and the analysis of it . all the song i just play long time ago only remembering
the fingering never come back under my finger . So i experiment a different way to remember songsā¦ hoping they will stay longer i memory ā¦ and hope they will help me remembering other songs too. This way is a bit longer to keep in mind and are probably less cleaner than the sweet way Hayden had arranged them ā¦ but they are more myself. But i dont at all criticise other way of learning ā¦ just my nowadays way.

Yes I agree. I think one of the benefits is that itās well known, and for me was a tune that I really wanted to learn from the start,
I agree that more of these kind of tutorials are what we need for our beginner students:
and so with all of my future arrangements, Iām going to create 2 versions:
Firstly a simple R-3-7 version, clearly highlighting the 25s 251s and other common progressions.
Secondly, a more complex version with reharms, substitutions, and other stylistic embellishments.
I think this will be nice to demonstrate the core of the harmony, and then in part 2 we can then demonstrate where we can take thingsā¦ Instead of diving straight into the deep end with the complex arrangement.
Thatās a great way of learning Pierre, understanding the functional harmony is the next step up from memorising the arrangements.
Also Pierre, my arrangements take time to put together, for sure Iām getting quicker as I do more, but some of them are really challenging to arrange and play. I put a tonne of work into listening to other versions before arranging them so itās not something that comes to me purely in the moment.
There will be more Pierre.
Many of our students are total beginners, and so thatās something to keep in mind too.
A number of our students have said they will be posting, and Iādd do some more performances too so slowly but surely we will get there with this.
I am really a windows guy but it should not be such complicate you can download it in youtube or just on some dropbox or icloud and just paste a link to it .
Right now Iām focusing on quartal voicings and rootless LH voicings on songs I can play as a ballad but actually lack real understandingā¦ Stella and I fall in Love too easily.
I had been able to play the ballad, but really didnāt know the chords and so Iām studying the chords and rootless LH.
I am listening to Chet Baker and. Miles Davis (but actually REALLY listening to the simple comping behind them on piano)
Hi Lori, Pierre, Hayden. I want to join the practice group / document my own practice and progress. Would this thread be a good place? I plan to make a tumblr with a video of practice and some notes every time I sit down, and then maybe make weekly reports. I donāt want to impinge on your space
Thanks Hayden. I am totally using your practice plans, actually pretty much to a T. I do often spend way more time than the recommended 5 minutes just because I am exploring things.
The 5 minutes is just a suggested time so feel free to do what works best for you.
The most important thing is that we visit different theory areas in 1 sitting, and not just spend the whole time on 1 exercise. Thatās what I was told by many teachers and musiciansā¦ ābreak our practice time into small chunks so we can cover lots of different topicsā.
Very beautiful arrangement. Kawai mp7 ? Jealous Pierre. I hope to be able to play the major and minor 251Å within the next few months. In Ecuador for the month at a beach house. Study lessons on rootless 251 each day but no keyboard to play on. Visualize keyboard in my mind and how each chord is played. I hope this helps me
