Funk, Jazz Funk, & Fusion Recordings

For all you fusion fans, I just came across Monkey Sessions (March 2022) by Voyage. I don’t know anything about the group, except that they are an extremely talented (probably young) keyboard trio. I’m guessing Brazilian, but I’m not sure. Besides their original tunes, they cover Milton Nascimento’s "Cais, " Chick Corea’s “500 Miles High,” and Horace Silver’s “Song for My Father.”

I am particularly fond of Nascimento’s “Cais,” so I’m including a video of the great Elis Regina accompanied on the piano by her husband, Cesar Camargo
Mariano. (Side note: I’ve been doing a deep dive into his recordings recently.)

Compare that with the first cut of Monkey Sessions. I hope you enjoy!

You also might enjoy their very fine EP called Studio Sessions (2019). It’s well worth a listen. The first cut is suspiciously close to Joan Manuel Serrat’s “Mediterráneo” (1971)in certain phrases. I’ve been listening to Serrat for years, and he is now on his farewell tour. His “Meditrráneo” is followed by Voyage’s EP. Enjoy! :musical_keyboard:
