Jovino, in his “Triads: Non-Linear Improvisation” class, among other things, shares some great insights about the music of João Donato who is 87 years old and has been a working musician since the late 1940s. His accordion rhythms prefigured the guitar chops that made João Gilberto famous with the first recorded bossa nova tune, Jobim’s “Chega de Saudade.”
Jovino’s lessons are quite clear, but I think putting the tunes he covers in a trio context helps explain what he’s teaching–and might just draw more attention to the incredible rhythmic/harmonic wealth of Brazilian piano . I hope you enjoy!
