Example of transition between songs

Hi @Hayden

Would it be possible for you to create a short clip where you demonstrate your suggestion below (quoted from a old conversation) using exactly the two songs mentioned?

Play a song like Misty, then when you get to the end, cycle around the 1625 for 5 or 10 minutes, and then when you hit the V7… Bb7, start another tune in Eb, such as Tenderly.

It would be helpful for me at this beginner stage to have a concrete working example that I could study and emulate using the excellent SoundSlice player.

We explore both chordal and melodic ideas for navigating and ‘freestyling’ over 1625 progressions.

Using 1625s To Connect Tunes:

The next step is using the 1625 to connect tunes or jazz standards.

In this lesson we use the 1625 to connect the following 3 Christmas songs into a continuous performance:

  • I’ll Be Home For Christmas
  • Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
  • The Christmas Song

The Key Of C Major

The seminar contents and the 3 tunes are in the key of C major, so everything that I show and demonstrate in the seminar can be directly applied when connecting these 3 Christmas songs using 1625 progressions.

The Value Of Transposition

To deepen your understanding of 1625 chordal/melodic options, a fantastic exercise is to transpose any of the 1625 ideas in the seminar into a different key.

In the seminar we cover the ideas in the key of C major and so the 1625 chords are:

Cmaj7 / A7 / D-7 / G7

The same 1625 progression in the key of Eb major would be:

Ebmaj7 / C7 / F-7 / Bb7

We do have a shorter lesson on 1625s in Eb Major here so you can use that to learn the basic voicings if that’s helpful.

If there are any particular 1625 examples/demonstrations that you like from my seminar above, transpose them into the key of Eb major so that you can use them to connect jazz standards that you have learnt in Eb major, such as ‘Misty’, ‘Tenderly’, ‘Over The Rainbow’ - I believe you are working on these tunes if I remember correctly.

By transposing a demonstration from the seminar, you will greatly improve your understanding of the concept/idea/technique, and the process of transposition also helps to ‘ingrain’ a particular concept/idea/technique into our playing style.
