Editing Software

I need to step up my editing skills. I use an iMac for pretty much everything I do. I use my phone to record but I have a quality camera I am learning to use. I also use Logic to record and edit my tracks. Do any Groovers have suggestions on programs, editing and otherwise, you use and know works well? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam

Great idea for a thread!

Likewise I use my MacBook for everything I do! Here’s some of the recording and editing software that I use on a regular basis:

Logic Pro X - https://www.apple.com/logic-pro/

I use Logic whenever I need to record audio or MIDI channels. The main reason I use Logic over say Apple’s default GarageBand is because the latter does not allow me to export my MIDI creations.

For PianoGroove lessons we utilise MIDI for the light up keyboard and so that’s one reason I have always used Logic.

There are many other DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations) on the market such as ProTools, Reason, Cubase Ableton, but I don’t have any experience with them. Perhaps other students have used them and can share their thoughts.

ScreenFlow - https://www.telestream.net/screenflow/

For video editing I use ScreenFlow which is somewhat limited in functionality compared to other video editing software such as Premier Pro, or Final Cut Pro. However, I find ScreenFlow to be more than sufficient for my needs.

The interface is quite simple and intuitive to use and it’s easy to add things like text layers and annotations. For me the key benefit is that the learning curve of using the software is not as steep as the other video editing suites mentioned above.

The functionality of ScreenFlow is somewhat limited - particularly in the realm of transitions and other effects - but I find that I can still create professions-looking videos using the software.

Thanks Hayden. I am going to try ScreenFlow to see if it’s a good fit. People don’t know how much work goes into editing, but I will soon learn. LOL. I will share what I come up with. Thanks for all you do.

I agree, Hayden. This is a “Great idea for a thread!”

I also use an iMac and a MacBook Pro. I’m trying to learn Logic Pro X and have gotten as far as getting my Roland RD-2000 working as a MIDI controller. I’m now working through a Udemy course on the software. (I also have MainStage3 to fiddle around with.)

I’ve got to get a handle on the DAW before I worry too much about editing, but I welcome anyone’s suggestions/ideas. I recorded a few things playing around. I see how recording can be a great help in one’s practice–a variety of problems become immediately apparent.
