The bar is called the Angry Beaver which is in Greenwood, so a fair distance from downtown Seattle, but the music is always top notch and worth the journey.
It’s hosted by Max - a talented young drummer who graduated from Berklee College of music and moved back to Seattle.
Both of the jams have no cover charge by the way but sometimes the house band will ask for small tips/donations.
I’ve probably posted this before, it’s my favourite bossa album:
I thought I’d bring this thread back on track as we went off an a tangent with the Omar S recording… Awesome funk solo though, if I played funk, that’s how i’d want to sound!
Nice record Francesco, I will pass this onto Jovino to be included in upcoming Brazilian jazz standard lessons. He is well-versed in all Brazilian tunes and so he will know the best way to teach this tune…
The great Joao Gilberto passed away … RIP … we keep his great music though…
ps looking for what he composed i discover that Estate was at first an italian song that Joao has transformed in bossa nova … one of my favourite brazilian -'italian" song. Odio le statue( i hate statues) was the original title a confusion move the title to estate … i need to hear the original lyrics … i love so much the french lyrics in french from NOugaro
I would like to use this space to share some great Brazilian music records that cross my way. I often find great new recordings and also some old gems that I might have heard in my early years in Brazil.
To get started, here is Cantiga de Longe" by the great composer Edu Lobo from 1970. This record features both of my music mentors Hermeto Pascoal and Airto Moreira. Enjoy:
And absolutely… I think that for anyone studying Brazilian music, it’s important for us to listen to both the newer recordings and also the ‘old gems’ like this one.
And speaking of new releases, please check out the great Claudia Villela, a singer and pianist on her new release “Encantada Live”, just out now. Here’s a link to the album on Spotify:
The album also features the great Kenny Werner on piano. Kenny has collaborated with several Brazilian artists including Joyce Moreno. Check it out…
Yes, this whole record was entirely improvised from beginning to end. It’s amazing when two creative musicians trust each other and simple “play”, isn’t it?
Hello folks. Here is a CD made by two super creative musicians from São Paulo, Brazil. Amilton Godoy was the pianist in the legendary Zimbo Trio, one of the most powerful piano trios starting in the 60s in Brazil. Léa Freire is a super flutist and pianist, with her own record label (Maritaca) always on the cutting edge of what is happening in my home country. If you happen to be in California, they will be touring this month in support of their latest release, 'San’São" with clarinet/sax master Harvey Wainapel. Not to be missed!
Enjoy…
Hello folks, one of the first recordings of the Samba Jazz period of the mid-1960s in Brazil was “À Vontade Mesmo” with the great Raul de Souza (or Raulzinho). The pianist on this session was Cesar Camargo mariano, the same who went on to arrange and play on so many of Elis Regina’s iconic recordings later on. Enjoy: https://youtu.be/JYcpO3E1TqY
A lot of people are familiar with Sergio Mendes and his role in disseminating Brazilian music in the world. Most do not know this recording he did in 1964 with his Sextet Bossa Rio produced by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Follow the playing on this link:

Of course, his piano playing is super economical and groovy.
Listen and study…
