This month marks my 3-year anniversary with PianoGroove. Before I decided to make a fresh start at the piano, our 60-year-old piano at home was merely a piece of furniture. I also bought a digital piano and a good pair of headphones to protect my wife from acoustic distortion. I wasn’t sure if, at 60, I should take the plunge into “jazz” — or whether I was still capable of learning and enjoying playing.
However, the past three years have been pure joy. Thanks to the teachers! I am not yet retired that´s why I have not attended the live lessons. Most times I watch them with delay.
To celebrate this anniversary, I chose the classic “Autumn Leaves” as a benchmark piece. The title now seems to suit this phase of my life. Of course, I can’t compete with the amazing interpretations by our teachers or the history behind this piece, but I had a lot of fun and enjoyment experimenting with reharmonization. I used a metronome at 135 during the recording. This gave me no chance for a rubato style in the middle of my rendition. The final chord is a Minor-Major of the I chord in e.
