Another style another lovely and visceral singing . Joyceful for the one who are loving this style
About the hammond cool playing ,i will go back to @Robert course.
Oh yeah! Love it! This is so fun and had me up dancing. Yes! Thanks!
My response was the same as Lyndol’s–“Oh yeah!” Then I saw she beat me to it. The organ is nice, sort of has a neo soul feel at the beginning. If you’re getting back to the organ, check out anything by Melvin Rhyne. You’re sure to find something of interest.
Wow… love this “Darn that Dream” voice-guitar version, Thank you keynut. Amazing
an amazing singer and a beautiful comping there what a beautiful moment
and this one another to add in my repertoire … makes me wanna to sing hearing that
00:14:48 - I Didn´t Know What Time It Was
I’ve been listening to a lot of Latin jazz recently, and I came across an album from Buika that really caught my attention, El Última Trago (Con la Colaboración de Chucho Valdés) (2009 Warner Music Spain). Chucho Valdés is a legendary Cuban pianist whose father, Bebo Valdés, was himself an acclaimed pianist and bandleader in Cuba before the Castro regime.
Buika is a [Spanish] singer, poet, composer and music producer. Her music draws on a wide range of influences, from jazz and flamenco to pop, soul and African polyrhythm. She began her career as a drummer and bassist, turning to singing only because “in Spain nobody wanted a female drummer, and I got tired of hearing no, no, no.” Buika then gained fame singing coplas in Madrid nightclubs in the late 1990s. She has been compared to Nina Simone, Chavela Vargas, Cesaria Evora, Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf, and Amy Winehouse.
Here are some tunes from that album that are of interest, not only for her voice, but for the fine accompanying piano as well. Enjoy!
On those hard days i love this group playing with fun this old french song
Love this tune as well, Pierrot. Was listening to it a couple of days ago. Emmet Cohen is one of the best young jazz pianists. Incredibly versatile. I got to see him and his trio in a small venue last year, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.
Veronica Swift has a new album on Mack Records coming out, This Bitter Earth. At 27, she shows a maturity and confidence in her voice that belies her age. She’s working with pianist Emmet Cohen again, and it’s a happy pairing. Only two cuts are currently available, “Prisoner of Love” and the title cut, “This Bitter Earth.” I especially like “Prisoner of Love.” It sounds like we’re back in the 30s or 40s. The video is another from the series of Emmet Cohen live sessions that @Pierrot recently shared above. Enjoy!
Ian H: As you say Scott1, Veronica Swift has a great voice with a lot of maturity. Perfect pitch too.
Reminds me of Dame Cleo Laine, one of my favourite singers from times past. Known for her scat singing and huge vocal range (a contralto, able to produce a G above high C, giving her a vocal range of well over 3 octaves). She’s now 93.
And Emmet Cohen - what a pianist!
Love this one too. Cyrille Aimee’s scat singing is highly reminiscent of Cleo Laine’s scat singing (referred to in my recent post).
Cleo’s tones.
Hi Rebecca. Many thanks for the Cleo Laine link. It’s great.
These days I live on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, but I used to live in Adelaide, hence was lucky enough to see her there at the Festival Theatre, when she toured with John Dankworth, many moons ago.
Regards, Ian Heron.
Lucky man!
Oh yeah! CéciIe McLorin Salvant’s Didn’t Know What Time It Was - Like butter! And excellent use of space in the arrangement. Then it just leads into such a rich melody. Yes!
PS - I’d love to hear your Vocal Version of it for sure Pierrot!!!
Concha Buika - such a unique voice. I had to look up her age, because she looks so young, but sounds so mature. Wonderful quality to her voice I can’t put my finger on. Not really raspy, but kinda. I don’t know, I don’t want to analyze. I just enjoyed it. Thanks Scott!
Re: Emmet Cohen Trio feat. Cyrille Aimeé … Oh man, that got me smiling! The fun is so contagious.
From her Intro - I didn’t see that rhythm coming. It was a fun surprise.
And just over all excellence!
Veronica Swift - very classy!
And interesting tunes. I’ve never heard This Bitter Earth before. Was surprised to see it’s from the 60’s.
And looks like Prisoner of Love is her original. Well done! She is going to have quite the career.
Ok, Diggin’ Cleo Laine! New to me. Going down the rabbit hole with her now.
Just found this gem - a Cleo’s Cover of Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. This song has been comforting for me lately. And I enjoyed this new version of it.
In fact, tonight was one of the tough nights. It really uplifted me to listen to this wonderfully curated string of Jazz Vocalist. Thanks guys! Hope all is well!
Lyndol,
You said that “tonight was one of the tough nights.” At times, I’ve found this time of year to be sort of depressing, even in the best of years. Hang in there.
You mentioned in your post on Veronica Swift that it “looks like Prisoner of Love is her original.” Not sure if I understood that correctly, but “Prisoner of Love” is a 1931 tune by Russ Columbo, Clarence Gaskill, and Leo Robin. It’s been covered by Etta James, Billy Eckstine, Perry Como, and Frank Sinatra among others. And now for something completely different (with apologies to Monty Python) among those others, here’s James Brown’s version. You might even learn a couple of dance moves.
